Most devastating flood, October 25, 2011
Map of the disaster:
October 25, 2011 - this date will remain in the history of the Cinque Terre forever. That day, one of the most devastating floods fell upon the National Park.
The damage amounts to millions and 13 people died. Many walking trails remained inaccessible to visitors for more than one year.
Vernazza - the village that suffered the most was rebuilt during more than two years. First floors of almost all the building in the village were destroyed and had to be renovated completely. Everything in the town was built almost from scratch, and even sewage had to be rebuilt.
As of today, only a couple of billboards remind about this terrible tragedy; the biggest one is located near Vernazza railway station.
So as to feel those terrible moments experienced by the residents, watch the video at the bottom of this page; some Vernazza inhabitants shot it on that very tragic day. No words can express the horror that you see here in the video.
On this page you can compare the pictures taken a couple of days after the flood with the photos of 2013.
Most of them are photos from Vernazza and Monterosso, as other villages suffered much less.
